The World

Hello there!

Alright, we’re in May and this is the second post of 2024.
As I mentioned in my previous post, this year has come with some burning challenges, because I have been struggling with a burn-out… hahahaha. Ahem. Moving on!

In any case, because of my emotional internal chaos, I have focussed on sculptures moslty with some painting practice for good measure. Everything else around doing art, like blogging, YouTube, social media in general has been left to the side, for whenever I have the energy to do it. Like today!

So here three sculptures I have worked on, finished and that already have sold as well. (thank you so much!!)
If you would like to know when new art is available, I always send out a newsletter. You can also find out a bit earlier on my Instagram, but with the current algorithm, it’s a bit of a gamble.

“Treasure” is an octopus hiding in a jewelry box. I found that beautiful box on a flea market and knew I was going to do something with it. The inside was this royal purple, likely a dye that would quickly fade, so I painted the faux fur to make sure it would last and keep that vibrant color. The outside looks very much like ivory, though since it’s thrifted it might just be another type of bone or maybe something else. The color scheme of the box decided the colors of the sculpture.
You can see more pictures of this one on its dedicated page.

“Fire Coral” is the first of a new series of works on plastic bottles I am currently working on.
I did work on a series of plastic bottles back in 2019-2020, you can view those here. And of course, I do the odd plastic bottle sculpture here and there, it’s a bit of favorite of mine to use.

This time however I went with metallic paint to cover the bottles. I have five more on the way, but those will be shown at my solo show later this fall with Arch Enemy Gallery in Philadelphia.

For this wee little one, the dark teal I picked for the bottle asked for a bright orange, which reminded me instantly of a fire coral and clown fishes. So I decided to go for an ocean theme for this one.
You can see more pictures of it on its page.

Also, these small bottles are usually my own, that I bring back from travelling, that’s really the only time I sometimes buy plastic bottles. I also sometimes get these as free gifts in hotels or in a menu. I bring all of these back to use in my work, because I find those the most visually telling of our times. It’s also a reminder of my own short-comings.

“The World” is the most complex of the three.
The original inspiration is drawn from the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, in which the world, in the form of a disc, lies on top of four elephants who are standing on the back of a turtle.
I was curious about this and discovered it originated from a myth in India and around Asia describing the world as a disc carried by four elephants on the back of a tortoise (sometimes a turtle) and the tortoise is sometimes on top of a snake.

What I find particularly compelling about this myth is its emphasis on the significance of other animals, while humans are mere microbes on a disc.

For the world itself using a compact disc made sense, as it’s a flat disc that fits the myth and it also can hold a world of data.

For more pictures of this sculpture, check out its page.

That’s pretty much it for this post, I hope you enjoyed reading a bit about my work and seeing these pictures!
Until next time!
