Valainistima, Whale in Oil Spill, 2018, Mixed Media Sculpture on Tin Can, Stephanie KilgastHey Folks :)You might remember my whale sculpture Valainistima, made in 2015.Back then, I sculpted waves as the base, which I quickly found to be too kitschy. The whale simply sat in my art studio for a couple of years, and forward to 2018, while I am working on trash and pollution, it suddenly hit me and so I recycled my own sculpture into a new one, that fits the current world issue of pollution.I sometimes wonder how much my art has some actual impact on others, on you maybe, but I believe it is the role of art to reflect on contemporary issues and what seems like the most crucial to tackle for me is the environmental crisis we are facing. There's so much one can do and change to lessen its environmental impact, simply reducing your buying habits, cooking more from scratch and eating less meat makes already a big difference and aren't very difficult goals to achieve. It is not about living a spartian life (though, if that's your thing, go ahead!) but rather to be more conscious about one's action.it is not about never indulging in the things you love to own or eat, but rather to be mindful of them.It is not about hating yourself for your mistakes and failures, but rather to focus on what you can easily do and change.Ok, this is getting too depressing! I am working on other nature related art these days, to lighten up my mood (and yours!) so don't fear, hope and brightness is still there and should be!I do hope you like this whale sculpture! It is available to purchase on my website, if you feel like owning a contemporary sculpture and I will donate 10% to pangeaseed if you so do wish.xxStéphanieNewsletter subscribers are always informed first!
