Happy Bugs

Saturdiinae Caterpillar Sculpture, Stéphanie KilgastChit-chatting with a dear friend of mine last week, I came to the realization that everything is very gloomy these days.Between the refugee crisis, the overall political landscape and our impact on the environment, desperation and austerity is what defines these days best. And frankly, I am sick of it.Tired of focusing on everything that is terrible in this world, in a desperate way to make it better. There is so much greatness as well, thus we either go in a great direction, the resources are here to ensure food, shelter and education for everyone... or we do nothing and are doomed. No matter how much efforts I am making, I am not the sole responsible for that future. So, even though I will certainly keep doing my very best, I also chose to stop continually worrying and start having fun!Especially in my work. And do happy sculptures.Yes happy!Happiness is powerful as it is incredibly contagious and happy people are much kinder and reasonable. So with this choice to go and have some fun, my friend encouraged me to sculpt bugs. As, to paraphrase the dragon in Jasper Fforde's novel "the last dragonslayer" : "if I had to describe the Earth, I'd say it's populated by mostly bugs."(I was too lazy to check for the exact wording, so if you want to correct me, be my guest!)I started a pinterest board a while ago with what I find most beautiful in nature. (hint : not mammals)And indeed I'm drawn to bettles, caterpillars and bugs, that can be so gloriously colorful. After stumbling last December on the most magnificent caterpillar photographed by Marco Fischer, I sculpted a quick miniature version.
But I'm working on that one again, only this time as a DJ! Because I love dancing and I believe music is something most people enjoy very much :)Saturdiinae Caterpillar Sculpture, Stéphanie KilgastI started with the "hair" (I'm guessing there is a proper word for those, leave a comment if you know!) and I still have lots of those to do. They are very time consuming and I'm learning to be patient with my sculptures. I want it to be done in one day, but that isn't realistic, it just takes time.Saturdiinae Caterpillar Sculpture, Stéphanie KilgastSo stay tuned for this new project, which should offer some ray of sunshine and lightness in these gloomy days.Because, yes, life is about joy too!I very much hope you'll like this new idea :)xxStéphanieSaturdiinae Caterpillar Sculpture, Stéphanie Kilgast
